Amini’s death under the detainment of Iran’s morality police last year sparked a worldwide movement
nne Hathaway is remembering Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish woman whose death ignited a mass global movement and revolution calling for social and gender equality.
The Devil Wears Prada star stepped out in New York City today wearing a white T-shirt with bright red text, which repeatedly printed Amini’s name in all-capital letters. She tucked the T-shirt into a black croc-embossed midi skirt, which coordinated with a pair of black slingback pumps by Santoni. To accessorize, she wore gold jewelry, including a delicate necklace, bracelets, and rings.

Hathaway’s T-shirt appears to be the same one that Jessica Chastain wore during a talk show appearance last November. At the time, the Good Nurse star styled her tee with a caramel suit, featuring a tailored blazer and tapered trousers, plus black pumps.

Amini died in Tehran on September 16, 2022, after being detained by Iran’s morality police, who accused her of improperly wearing the hijab and violating the government’s mandatory dress code for women. Though authorities claimed she had died of a heart attack, Amini’s father later told the BBC that witnesses saw her being beaten in custody.
Since her death, Iranian women led a revolution calling for an end to the regime. They protested by shedding their hijabs, which have been compulsory for over four decades, and cutting their hair.
Amini’s father recently remembered his daughter—whom he refers to by her Kurdish name, Jina—in a statement released to the New York Times. “Jina had a very pure and kind heart,” he wrote. “If you met her once and heard her soft voice, you could never forget her.”
