The 51-year-old was pictured at Portcullis House mixing with politicians and standing for photographs – but no one seems to know why he was there.

In the midst of post-Brexit debates and a vote of no confidence in the Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, 67, politics has taken an even stranger turn with the arrival of The Matrix star.

Confused members of the British public took to social media to share images of Keanu and question what his involvement was, largely to no avail.

One user wrote: “Wait, why is Keanu Reeves just casually at Parliament!?”

Another bewildered person said: “Keanu Reeves is in parliament? This week just gets weirder and weirder.”

“So, Keanu Reeves was in parliament today. OK what the hell is going on at the moment? Did I have a stroke on Friday or something?” a further individual tweeted.

As the country is facing one of the largest shake-ups in its history, some people have hypothesised that the A-lister was joining the shadow cabinet, with many welcoming such a notion.

“Keanu Reeves for new shadow education secretary, I think, but it’s only a rumour at this stage #keanureeves #matrix,” someone pondered.

“Is Keanu Reeves after the main job, that would be interesting!!!” one more speculated.

Others even called for Keanu to take over as prime minister when David Cameron, 49, steps down from 10 Downing Street in September.

“Seeing as he’s in town and shown up at Westminster, why not let Keanu Reeves take over as PM? He can’t do much worse that Corbyn or Cameron,” one user proclaimed.

“Can we have Keanu Reeves as our next PM? Please,” a fan begged.

However, Sky reporter Beth Rigby has said that the star was in Parliament as a guest of Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon Nadhim Zahawi.
