“A Miracle for a Rescued Canine: Finding a New Home on Two Legs after Surviving a Dog Meat Trade”

Emma Roo, an adorable three-year-old Dalmatian, has found a loving home despite losing both her front legs to a dog meat slaughterhouse in Xi’an, China back in 2017. Her ears and a portion of her tail were also shaved off. According to sources, removing the limbs of an animal helps in producing adrenaline, which tenderizes the remaining meat. Following her rescue, Emma was taken to a veterinary facility in Beijing, where she was rehomed for two years before returning to the clinic in 2019.

Dalmatian Rescue, a non-profit organization based in South Florida, was approached by rescue groups who needed assistance. They soon found Emma, a three-year-old Dalmatian who caught the attention of Misha Rackcliff Hunt, a guest services coordinator and lifelong dog lover from Charleston, South Carolina. Misha adopted Emma Roo in April 2020 after seeing her online. Emma has suffered human-inflicted injuries, a common occurrence with “rare” breeds that are often dismembered and tortured. Due to her trauma, Emma is afraid of any chainsaw-like sounds, including hair dryers, vacuums, and lawn mowers.

According to the vet, it has been confirmed that Emma was 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 with a 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 defect resulting in a missing toe on her back paw. This may have led to her abandonment at a young age as she was deemed unsellable and unadoptable. Emma made her way to the United States just before the COVID-19-related animal export ban in January 2020. Initially, Emma displayed separation anxiety and was very protective of her belongings. She would even guard pieces of clothing out of fear they would be taken away. To help soothe her nerves, a male massage therapist was hired who has made a positive impact on Emma’s behavior, allowing her to become more relaxed around men.

The author reminisces about the first time they saw Emma online, admiring her beautiful amber eyes that looked strikingly human. Despite not considering the practicalities of adopting a dog, the author knew that Emma was meant to be their companion. Upon meeting her, they were surprised to find that Emma was warm and affectionate despite her past trauma. After a long road trip home, Emma quickly bonded with the author, recognizing them as her person. Emma has since gained a following of 10,000 fans on Instagram, with the help of Misha and Dalmatian Rescue, who used social media to raise funds for Emma’s custom front wheel cart from Eddie’s Wheels. As an ambassador for non-profit organization Joey’s P.A.W, Emma was connected with Derrick Campana of Bionic Pets in Virginia, who provided her with custom prosthetics.

Emma’s recovery is progressing well, and she enjoys making friends wherever she goes. Misha mentioned that Emma’s personality is shining a little more with each passing day, which is beautiful to see. Despite struggling with her cart and prosthetics because of the way she carries her body, Emma loves water therapy at a local dog pool and undergoes massages to relieve tight muscles in her back. She now enjoys playing catch and with stuffed toys and behaves well around other dogs at the park. Emma has discovered a whole world of activities and loves swimming, even without her life vest for short distances. The beach is her favorite place, where she can run freely in the soft sand. Misha cried when she saw how happy Emma was there. Through social media, Misha and Emma aim to raise awareness about the dog meat trade. They want people to know that the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in the Guangxi region still exists, where around 10,000 dogs are consumed over the ten-day event annually.

Misha is making a difference by selling t-shirts with the message ‘Stand up for those who can’t’ and supporting organizations that work to end the controversial industry of dog breeding. Despite efforts to stop this practice, it still occurs in many countries. Misha also advocates for differently-abled dogs, believing that every dog deserves a chance regardless of their circumstances. She emphasizes that dogs are the real heroes and encourages people to seek help from organizations that can assist in providing the best life possible for their pets. Despite being praised as selfless and amazing, Misha sees herself as an ordinary person who believes in making a positive difference in the world. She believes that it is not difficult to do so and urges others to take action too.
