Nkunku backup plan

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Chelsea are in the market for a replacement for Christopher Nkunku, who is set to be out for an ‘extended period’ after picking up a knock. The 25-year-old forward suffered a knee injury against Borussia Dortmund during the Blues’ pre-season tour of the United States.

Speaking to the press ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, the 51-year-old said: “We feel very sorry about him.

“He was very important for us. Now it’s about not to think too much about the injuries and to be positive about when he can be back with us as soon as possible. We are working in the market also, trying to find a solution, maybe short term, medium and long term to find the right profile for the team.”

Lavia update

Russell Martin has issued an intriguing update on Romeo Lavia’s future amid interest from Chelsea and Liverpool. The 19-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League this summer following his impressive performances for Southampton.

The Blues are long admirers of the teenage sensation and he’s somebody who has been on their radar for a while, football.london understands. Ahead of Southampton’s clash against Norwich on Saturday afternoon, Martin revealed that Lavia’s future will be resolved ‘very soon’.

“He trained well with us today,” said the Saints boss. “I won’t ask him to start after the minutes he’s had and what’s been going. It’ll be resolved very soon I’m sure. It’s been very fluid so far.”

Caicedo twist

Chelsea remain confident they can still sign Moises Caicedo despite Liverpool agreeing a £110million deal with Brighton, football.london understands.

In the early hours of Friday morning, news broke that the Reds had agreed a British record transfer fee of £110million with the Seagulls for the Ecuador international. However, Caicedo has not yet agreed personal terms with Liverpool despite the Merseyside club planning a medical for the midfielder at the AXA Training Centre on Friday afternoon.

Caicedo, though, is still in London. While Chelsea have not yet come back with an improved offer to Brighton, sources have told football.london that they intend to do so and remain confident they can pip Liverpool to the 21-year-old’s signature.
