Kylian Mbappe and PSG’s ever-swaying Mexican standoff
In 2022, Kylian Mbappe signed a contract extension with PSG extending his stay by 2 more years. There was a provision for extension for a third year but the power to extend resided with Mbappe. The deadline for extension was 31st July,2023.
On June 12th, Kylian Mbappe sent a formal letter to the PSG management stating that he wished to end his career in the summer of 2024. The letter was publicized and PSG was called out in the open.
PSG believed that the player assured them that he wouldn’t leave the club on a free transfer. The club stated if it failed to receive any fee for Mbappe, there would be Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns. The club then sent a letter to Mbappe’s entourage that accused him of hurting the club. It also gave an ultimatum to Mbappe to respond with his decision by 31st July.
The player was taken off the pre-season friendly list and sent to train with U-21s. In the events that followed, Neymar was sold and Ousmane Dembele was signed. Mbappe then had talks with the management and was soon reinstated into the first team.
