Superman Legacy’s New Costume Gets A Disappointing Update From James Gunn

James Gunn shares an update on Superman: Legacy’s new suit, and those who want to see David Corenswet’s Superman costume soon will be disappointed.

SUMMARY

  •  DC fans will have to wait longer to see David Corenswet’s Superman costume in “Superman: Legacy” according to James Gunn.
  •  With a 2025 release date, holding back on the “Superman: Legacy” suit reveal makes sense.
  •  The ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes could potentially delay the filming of “Superman: Legacy,” further postponing the costume reveal.

James Gunn has a disappointing update for DC fans who want to see Superman: Legacy‘s new costume soon. 2025’s Superman: Legacy serves as the first movie in the new DC Universe. While it is known that Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane — with multiple DC heroes also announced for the film — many details are still under wraps, one of them being Superman: Legacy‘s new costume.

On Instagram, Gunn revealed that DC fans will have to wait longer for Corenswet’s Superman: Legacy suit to be unveiled.

After a fan asked Gunn if he could “post the Superman suit already,” the Superman: Legacy writer/director answered with a disappointing update, saying, “Not even slightly close to doing that.” Based on Gunn’s words, the debate around Corenswet’s Clark Kent wearing trunks or no trunks in Superman: Legacy will go on for quite some time.

Why It Makes Sense For Superman: Legacy’s New Costume To Not Be Revealed Soon

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for a July 11, 2025, release. With the film still around two years away, it makes sense that Gunn would want to keep one of the most important aspects of the movie under wraps until closer to Superman: Legacy‘s release. Corenswet’s Superman costume will inevitably be a key component of Superman: Legacy‘s marketing, appearing in promotional stills and trailers, so there is no rush to reveal it.

Besides, Hollywood is currently experiencing a great bout of uncertainty, with many movies and TV shows getting pushed back due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While Superman: Legacy‘s 2025 release date seems fairly safe, the movie could be affected in a key way that would make the reveal of Corenswet’s Superman suit take even longer.

Superhero projects often get their new suits revealed through set photos, as was the case for the comic book-accurate team costumes in Gunn’s own Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Superman: Legacy was eyeing to begin filming at the start of 2024, but with the Hollywood strikes not having an endpoint clear yet, Superman: Legacy‘s filming could get delayed, putting the DC Universe’s Superman suit reveal farther away. Gunn could also be holding back on the suit reveal because he has yet to settle on what will be Corenswet’s Superman: Legacy costume.
