Throughout his NFL career, Patrick Mahomes has admitted that he has worn the same underpants to every game

It turns out Patrick Mahomes is quite the superstitious type.

The Kansas City Chiefs star made an appearance on ESPN’s Manningcast during Week 10’s Monday Night Football where he revealed a rather strange game day ritual.

The Kansas quarterback chopped it up with Peyton and Eli Manning on the alternate broadcast during the Broncos vs Bills matchup, which the Broncos won 24-22.

The legendary NFL trio discussed a number of topics, including Mahomes’ game day superstitions.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP’s underwear have been a talking point ever since former teammate Chad Henne claimed Mahomes wore the same pair of red underwear during every single game.

After Eli brought it up, Mahomes confirmed the rumours explaining they were a gift from his wife.

The QB elaborated on the bizarre superstition saying that he wears them because the team started winning games around the same time he first put them on.

“First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I have to wear them,” Mahomes explained. “At the same time, I threw ’em on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season – I only wear them for gameday, though, so they’re not too worn down. I clean them. I wash them every once in a while, at least.

“If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them. I gotta just keep it rolling. As long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going,” he joked.

Mahomes’ admission calls back memories of UFC superstar Conor McGregor introducing the phrase ‘Red Panty Night’ to the world at at the UFC “Go Big” press conference in 2015.

The Irish MMA star trolled then-lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos by claiming fighting him would make him rich.

“When you sign to fight me, it’s a celebration,” McGregor famously said. “You ring back home, you ring your wife, ‘Baby, we’ve done it. We’re rich, 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦. Conor McGregor made us rich, break out the red panties.”

It seems ‘red panties’ are a good luck charm for many of the world’s top sportsman.

Elsewhere on the Manningcast, Mahomes discussed the Chiefs performances this season.

The signal-caller admitted the Chiefs’ offense had been holding the team back in recent games.

“If the offense was playing as well as the defense, there’d be nothing to say. If the offense picks it up, we’ll be all good,” he said.

Kansas City are 7-2 so far this season but have looked far from their best. They face the 8-1 Philadelphia Eagles next weekend in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl.
