Emma Stone’s new movie sets new 2024 recordSearchlight Pictures
Emma Stone’s new movie Kinds of Kindness has set a new box-office record for 2024.
The new film from Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos stars Stone, Jesse Plemons and Nosferatu star Willem Dafoe, with supporting roles from Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie.
Kinds of Kindness which debuted in five US cinemas this weekend has reported a per-theatre average in the US of $70,000. This makes it the best average for a limited release film this year to date (per The Hollywood Reporter).
The movie is set to be released in UK cinemas this week (June 28).
Lanthimos’ new film is an anthology film made up of three different stories, with Stone and Plemons playing the leading roles.
The first in the “triptych fable” sees a man (Plemons) controlled by the choices of an older man (Defoe) who tries to take back control of his life, whilst the second sees Plemons as a devastated husband struggling with his missing wife (Stone) and suspects foul play upon her return.
Kinds of Kindness ends with Stone playing a woman on a desperate hunt to track down a special individual who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May where it received largely positive reviews. Kinds of Kindness debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% rating based on its first 21 reviews, which has since dipped to 73% at the time of writing.
In Digital Spy’s 4 star review, movies editor Ian Sandwell applauded the central performances, particularly Plemons who “commits to everything Lanthimos throws at him, often making himself quite pathetic when the character calls for it”.
“Like with Stone, you’ll want to see Plemons work again with Lanthimos as it’s a career-best performance.”
Kinds of Kindness marks Stone and Lanthimos’ third film together, having worked together previously on The Favourite and Poor Things, with a future project rumoured to be a remake of the South Korean film, Save the Green Planet.
