Australian model Elle Macpherson said she has been quietly fighting breast cancer for the past seven years and has chosen traditional medicine as her treatment.
In an interview with Australian magazine Women’s Weekly , the 60-year-old supermodel opened up for the first time about her health and recovery. Recalling the doctor’s diagnosis seven years ago, Elle Macpherson called it “a shock, unexpected, confusing and scary in many ways.”
Elle said that after she had a lump removed from her breast, her doctor called to say it was HER2-positive estrogen-receptive ductal carcinoma. She was advised to treat the cancer with a mastectomy and chemotherapy.
Despite her anxiety, Elle said it gave her “the opportunity to find the right solution for me.” The supermodel chose a holistic approach to treating her cancer, without the use of chemotherapy or pharmaceuticals. “I realized that my faith would support me through the disease. And that’s what I did,” Elle said.
In her memoir Elle released on September 3, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover star also shared about her decision: “I understood that there are no certainties and absolutely no guarantees. There is no right way, only the right way for me. Saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. People thought I was crazy. But I knew I had to make the choice that was right for me. For me, that dealt with the emotional and physical factors associated with breast cancer. It took courage.”
The supermodel spoke about the mixed reactions of her two sons, Flynn, 26, and Cy, 21, to their mother’s choice. Cy supported her decision not to undergo chemotherapy while Flynn felt confused. However, both have supported their mother throughout the process.
Elle Macpherson has revealed that she is now in clinical remission. The supermodel feels healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
