The 10 most thrilling elements of The Flash (other than Keaton’s Batman) movie

Although Michael Keaton’s Batman has been a big draw for The Flash movie, there’s more than just the classic Caped Crusader to get excited about.

Although the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman has been a big part of The Flash’s marketing, there are a good number of things to get excited about beyond the classic Caped Crusader. Attempting to race back in time to save his mother, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will inadvertently cause a massive domino effect that results in a collision of realities and major disruption to the multiverse. While this will lead to Barry meeting Keaton’s Batman, there’s so much more multiversal excitement to look forward to.

Originally announced back in 2014, it’s taken The Flash nearly a decade to finally get made and released in theaters, an ironically slow turnaround for a movie about DC’s Fastest Man Alive. As such, the odds are strong that the version being released in June is by no means the movie that was originally envisioned over nine years ago. However, that’s probably for the best as The Flash is now poised to usher in a brand-new status quo for the DC Universe at large. Here are ten things about The Flash to get excited about (besides Michael Keaton’s Batman).

10Ben Affleck’s Batman Is Just As Exciting For The Flash As Keaton

Thanks to Barry Allen effectively destabilizing the multiverse, The Flash is confirmed to feature two different versions of Batman (though perhaps there will be more). In any event, Ben Affleck’s Batman is set to appear, continuing to serve as the Flash’s de facto mentor after he recruited Barry in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Having had a challenging experience playing the Dark Knight both in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the theatrical version of Justice League, Affleck has confirmed that he finally enjoyed his time as Bruce Wayne while filming The Flash. As such, it will be very exciting to see what is likely Affleck’s final appearance as Batman.

9Sasha Calle Will Play A Very Different Supergirl

While Barry will be joining forces with Keaton’s Batman to restore the universe, they’ll also recruit Supergirl (Sasha Calle). However, this version of Kara Zor-El looks to be very different from the version seen in the CW’s Arrowverse played by Melissa Benoist. Taking Superman’s role from the comics’ Flashpoint storyline, Kara looks to be held in a Russian prison (and might have been ever since her arrival to Earth). Likewise, there have been teases that Superman is dead in this new reality created by Barry Allen, hence the need for Kara as a new Kryptonian hero.

8General Zod’s Return In The Flash Will Surpass Man of Steel

The primary need for Sasha Calle’s Supergirl is to combat General Zod (Michael Shanon). In the absence of Superman, Zod’s invasion and plan to turn Earth into a New Krypton from Man of Steel will seemingly go unopposed before Batman and Flash convince Kara to help them. Regardless, the return of the DCEU’s very first villain is very exciting, bringing the shared movie universe full circle before The Flash likely changes the entire status quo going forward.

7A Flashpoint-Inspired Multiverse Story

As previously mentioned, The Flash is loosely adapting significant concepts from the comics’ major Flashpoint event. While not a perfect adaptation, the core beats are present with Barry going back in time to save his murdered mother, inadvertently rewriting reality for the worse. He also had to regain his lost powers before he could set things right which The Flash has also teased. Likewise, the Flash’s restoration of reality in the comics wasn’t a perfect fix as there were still permanent alterations to the rebooted DC Universe known as the New 52. As such, it will be very exciting to see how this live-action mirror to Flashpoint plays out.

6New Suit and Powers For Barry Allen’s The Flash

The trailers for The Flash have also revealed Barry Allen’s new and improved suit compared to the one he wore in Justice League. Housed within his classic Flash ring from the comics, canonical prequel comics have confirmed that the ring and suit were made for Barry by Ben Affleck’s Batman. Additionally, the same comic miniseries revealed that Barry continued to train and develop his powers, and some of these new abilities will likely be seen for the first time on-screen when The Flash hits theaters.

5Cameos and Surprise Characters In The Flash

A superhero multiverse movie is always a prime opportunity for surprise cameos and appearances from exciting characters. Beyond the two different versions of Batman, Zod, and Supergirl, the trailers for The Flash have revealed that Jeremy Irons’ Alfred will play a small role supporting Affleck’s Dark Knight. However, these confirmed characters are undoubtedly just the tip of the iceberg for the upcoming Flash movie.

4The Flash’s Secret Villain

While General Zod has been set up as the main villain in The Flash’s trailers, Supergirl seems to have the Kryptonian foe handled with support from Keaton’s Batman and Barry Allen. However, it’s been theorized that there will be a more direct foe who will face Barry Allen, though they’ve been kept hidden from the majority of the film’s marketing. After all, the Reverse-Flash was the one who 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed Barry’s mother in the comics. Perhaps Barry’s arch-rival will make his live-action debut in the movie’s third act.

3Two Flashes Are Better Than One…Or Are They?

A big consequence of Barry’s actions is the collision of realities, something that will become extremely evident once Barry comes face to face with himself. Joining Barry in his mission to restore the universe, it’s going to be very humorous to see two versions of The Flash working together, effectively doubling Ezra MIller’s comedic potential. However, it’s also been theorized that this other Barry could be The Flash’s secret villain, a unique version of the Reverse-Flash who somehow becomes corrupted over the course of the DC movie.

2Redemption In The Flash For Kiersey Clemons’ Iris West

It will also be exciting to finally see Kiersey Clemons as Barry Allen’s love interest Iris West. Although her scenes in 2017’s Justice League were cut, the scene was brought back with Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021. However, the scene in question was a “Flashtime” sequence in which she was in slow-motion being saved by Barry, presumably the first time he ever saw her. As such, The Flash will be the first true opportunity for audiences to see Iris’ chemistry and relationship with Barry Allen on the big screen.

1The Flash Setting Up A Bold New DC Future

Just like the comics’ Flashpoint which 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡ed the rebooted DC Universe known as the New 52, it’s believed that The Flash movie will similarly set the stage for the new DC Universe envisioned by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Featuring new versions of Superman and Batman while seemingly keeping elements of the DC Universe that came before, it does seem as though the events of The Flash will be directly responsible for the new status quo, making the upcoming DC movie incredibly important when it hits theaters on June 16th.
